JAWARA WAUCHOPE

Jawara Wauchope is an editorial hair stylist and the man behind the hairdos of some of the most influential women in entertainment and arts. His knowledge and manipulation of different hair textures allows him to create gravity-defying structures, cementing him as a key trailblazer of the future of hairstyling.

Born in New York and raised in Jamaica until he was 10, where he first began his relationship with hair at his aunt’s salon. In 2009, Jawara earned his degree in Fashion Merchandising at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York — which he paid for by working as an assistant at a hair salon. After graduating, Jawara had a short stint in fashion merchandising, but quickly went back to hair styling, studying cosmetology at the Aveda Institute in New York.

Soon after, Jawara joined Sam McKnight’s team. After years of training with McKnight as his mentor, Jawara became a freelance stylist in 2013. Currently the senior beauty editor-at-large for i-D and a global styling ambassador for Dyson, this superstar stylist continues to expand his impact on hairstyling through his groundbreaking work through editorial, runway, and celebrity clients – including Beyonce, Solange, Rihanna, Tracee Ellis Ross, Naomi Campbell and more. He collaborates with photographers like Norman Jean Roy, Lacey and Oliver Hadlee Pearch, and work has appeared in the editorial pages of various Vogue editions, WSJ Magazine, i-D and Dazed. Jawara also styled the hair for the runway shows and campaigns of Calvin Klein , Chanel Beauty, Hermès and Off-White, among others.

TIPPI SHORTER

Tippi Shorter is a textured hair expert and educator, whose background in editorial and celebrity styling eventually led her to pursue her passion in hair education. She continues to change the landscape through global workshops and training events for professionals toward fulfilling her mission of elevating textured hair styling.

Raised in Southern California, Tippi grew up involved in various dance and singing groups. In her freshman year of college, she realized her true passion was hair styling and makeup. She attended cosmetology school while apprenticing at salons. Within a year of assisting Jamika Wilson, the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Shorter was collaborating on beauty shoots for music videos and album covers. In 1995, Tippi moved to New York and opened a salon with the intent of getting people hooked on her signature big sexy healthy hair. There, her salon took off, and she began working on her celebrity clientele, including Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Angela Bassett, Regina King and other icons. Her work has graced the covers of Elle, Essence, Vanity Fair, In Style, Allure, O, Seventeen, and more.

As the natural hair scene began to grow, Tippi saw a gap in professional care in the space and began her mission to educate stylists on textured hair care. She became the first African American beauty professional spokesperson for Pantene, and the 1st global artistic director for textured hair for aveda. In 2019, she joined Mizani as global Artistic Director and is the newest member of the L’Oreal Professionnel color artist team.
